The youth of today have found a new EXCUSE to get out of anything they don’t want to do: mental health! Nowadays, it seems that everyone is ‘’STRUGGLING’’ with some sort of mental health issue, whether it’s anxiety, depression, or something else entirely. Instead of simply saying they don’t feel like doing something or that they’re TOO LAZY, young people everywhere are now citing mental health as the reason why they can’t fulfill their obligations. And why not? It’s the PERFECT EXCUSE. It’s not like anyone can argue with you or ask for proof, right?
We’ve all heard the stories – the student who didn’t turn in their assignment because they were feeling too ‘’anxious’’, the neighbor who was somehow unable to pay the rent because of a ‘’BIPOLAR EPISODE’’, the friend who canceled plans because they were feeling overwhelmed. And while we want to be understanding and supportive, it’s hard to believe and wonder if they’re really telling the truth or just CAPPING.
After all, it’s not like mental health is something that can be easily diagnosed or measured. There’s no blood test or X-ray that can definitively prove whether someone is feeling anxious or depressed. And while we don’t doubt that there are PLENTY of people out there who are GENUINELY struggling with their mental health, it’s hard to believe that EVERY moron is suddenly afflicted with the same issues!
So, what’s the solution? Should we start asking for doctor’s notes every time someone cites mental health as a reason for their behavior? Should we start treating mental health issues with the same skepticism as we do physical illnesses? Or should we just ACKNOWLEDGE that mental health has become the go-to excuse for the youth of today?
